Red Light Therapy: A Bright Idea or Just a Flash in the Pan?

One of the best parts of my job is getting new clients in the door who like to share all the “things” they are doing. And by "things," I mean anything related to health and beauty. Last weekend, a client recommended Red Light Therapy, claiming she lost two inches the very first day. Naturally, my curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to try it.

My Red Light Therapy Adventure

I contacted Well Consulted in Brookfield, WI, and they squeezed me in the next day. I was instructed to refrain from eating two hours before and to stay hydrated—basically, the prelude to every medical procedure and sci-fi alien encounter.

Upon arrival, they brought me into an office and talked me through the treatment. The next stop was a machine that scanned my body, revealing way more than just my weight and BMI. It told me how many calories I should consume, recommended protein and carbohydrates daily, how much visceral fat I have—you know, the fat that hugs your organs. I know, gross, right?—and even provided diet improvement tips. So far, I was impressed. The machine practically knew my body better than I know it myself.

The Glowing Experience

Next, they led me into another room where I would lie down for the red light therapy. But first, I had to strip down to my underwear, and the tech took measurements. It’s not every day you get semi-naked for a stranger with a tape measure, but hey, all in the name of science, right?

Then came the moment of truth. I laid down on the bed, and she covered me with red light pads. For the next 25 minutes, I basked in a warm, red glow. It was very relaxing—not hot, just pleasantly warm. I’m not sure if I fell asleep or just meditated, but it was definitely nice. If they ever market this as a new form of napping, I’m all in.

When the timer went off, she unwrapped me, and it was time for the pièce de résistance: the vibration plate. She said I could get dressed at this point, but I had a secret hope to see my jiggly bits melt off my body on the vibration plate. Spoiler alert: that didn’t happen. But for the five minutes I wobbled around, I definitely imagined it.

After my session on the human blender, she re-measured me and then took me to a hydrotherapy bed for another five minutes of relaxation. Finally, I met with the doctor, who went over my scan results. The verdict? I lost two inches overall from this session. Wonderful!

Then came the sales pitch. They have packages, and I had until the end of the day to get the discounted price. Darn—I like to think things through and do a little more research. So, I told them I’d get back to them and left.

What I Learned About Red Light Therapy

I got home and did more research about the benefits of red light therapy. Here’s what I found:

1. Inch Loss and Fat Reduction: Red light therapy can help reduce inches and promote fat loss.

2. Skin Health: It’s known to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and boost collagen production.

3. Pain Relief: Many users report reduced inflammation and pain relief.

4. Detoxification: It aids in the detox process, helping to flush out toxins.

Conclusion: Green Light for Red Light?

Overall, my experience was great. Would I give red light therapy the green light? Yes! But don’t be fooled. This is not a quick or easy fix for an unhealthy lifestyle. It’s an additional tool to help you detox and lose a few inches along your health and wellness journey. It’s not a replacement for good old-fashioned diet and exercise. Can you lose weight without it? Yes. Absolutely. Do you need red light? No. But if you’re looking for a way to pamper yourself while inching closer to your fitness goals, red light therapy might just be for you.

For now, I’m sticking to my regular healthy lifestyle of walking and eating well—simply because the price tag for red light therapy was a bit more than I wanted to spend right now. But if you’re curious about how it can help you, I highly recommend checking out Well Consulted in Brookfield to find out more!
